A thousand shades of grey

My mood, and the weather.

Anyway, Sunday's food:

Breakfast - bowl of porridge with stewed apple/pear, plus a glass dilute orange juice.

Afternoon snack - slice of fruitcake with a drizzle of low-fat vanilla yoghurt, plus half a banana. Later, a cup of milky tea.

Dinner - bowl of leek and potato soup with a dollop of creme fraiche, plus salad leaves with blue cheese. And a piece of cheese pizza (no tomato) and a chunk of bauernbrot with margarine. Dessert was supposed to be a mandarin, but it was dry and unappetizing, so I heated it in a pan with a bit of butter and sugar. Nice, but VERY strongly flavoured! Mug peppermint tea

Later - three squares of dark chocolate and an apple bar. Alas, I felt woozy and had to eat more. GI values, we must value you more.

Monday:

Weight - 69.7 - disappointing. I can't eat much less or I will fall in a heap...exercise, GI and more protein, I guess. Grrrr.

Breakfast - 1/2 cup of muesli with low-fat yoghurt and milk. 1 banana. 1 mug dilute OJ.

Lunch - potato with cheese and coleslaw (bright purple!)

AT - one small cupcake, mug herbal tea.

Dinner - egg and cress sandwich. 1 flake. 1 bag popcorn. (oops...I was, however, feeling wretched. Probably worth it.)

And the band played on...

First orchestra rehearsal of the year - we're playing Carmen, which went fairly well. Not the most interesting horn part, but not a bad thing if, as rumour has it, another piece is Brahms: Academic Festival Overture, which has unpleasant transposition.

Anyway, ate well today, but probably too much. Although I have been out and about a fraction more...

Breakfast: bowl of porridge with stewed apple and pear.

Morning tea: half a piece vegan banana cake, black tea with a splash of milk (no sugar)

Lunch: small bowl of french onion soup, plus a small sandwich with red onion, tomato and smoked cheese. And a bottle of sparkling mineral water. (After orchestra, in pub.)

Afternoon tea: 1 banana. Later, 1 special K muesli bar. (hmmm)

Dinner: low fat beef stew (half a Tesco packet) jazzed up with corn and peas, plus some broccoli and too many boiled new potatoes with chol. reducing marg and two forkfuls low-fat creme fraiche. Generally yummy, but portion size was a bit iffy. Followed by a mug of peppermint tea and three squares of dark chocolate.

I've got a quiet day planned tomorrow, so less food required. We shall see what the scales say on Monday.

That was the week that was

And frankly, it was not a great week. I've felt exhausted, sore and had an upset stomach for most of the week. Indeed, most of the last four days have been spent in bed. So exercise has been, well, non-existent. Vicious weather hasn't helped - frozen rain, icy gales, sleet, and generally freezing temperatures. But that's not really an excuse, or else Scandinavians would all be fat. And they're not.

Anyway, the diet has gone surprisingly well, under the circumstances. Only one partial collapse, and that was made up by a minimal dinner. I suspect there may be a few minor omissions, as I'm noting this down after the event. But my memory is reasonably accurate.

Tuesday:

Bad day - most of it spent in bed.

Breakfast - 1/2 cup of fruit muesli with yoghurt and semi-skim milk

Dinner - 1/2 tin baxter's tomato soup, one wholemeal roll with tinned tuna, mayo, spinach and a little bit of cheese. Plus a small piece of fruitcake and a mug of milky tea.

Wednesday:

Breakfast - 1/2 cup of fruit muesli with yoghurt and semi-skim milk

Lunch - egg and cold meat sandwich, a few pieces of fresh pineapple

AT - apple and blackcurrant smoothie

Dinner - orange and pineapple smoothie (too much juice, I know), small serve (unfinished) of pasta salad made with yesterday's leftover sandwich filling plus some corn, 1/2 an apple and 1/2 a pear tossed in a bit of butter, water, brown sugar and cinnamon and stewed until soft but not mushy. (VERY YUMMY!)

Thursday

No breakfast, due to feeling very ropey. Only just out of the house in time for a lecture, after which I consumed:

1 panini with tomato, basil and mozarella, one packet artisan salt and vinegar crisps, one large chocolate chip cookie, and the better part of a bottle of dilute fruit drink. All rather yummy, and I don't actually have many regrets there, particularly given how I felt.

Dinner: 1 brown roll with low-chol margarine and vegemite, 1 tub low-fat yoghurt. 1 mug milky tea.

Friday

Brunch - 1 bowl muesli with remainder of apple and pear compote. Yummy!

AT - 1/2 piece vegan banana cake with low-fat vanilla yoghurt. Tasted vaguely like custard, actually. 1 glass orange juice, diluted. (half the bottle, rest for tomorrow)

Dinner - 1 bowl Covent Garden wild mushroom soup, diluted with water, with herbs and pepper added, plus a spoonful of low-fat creme fraiche. (Prob. about 3/4 of carton, rest thrown away due to leaks.) 1 large bowl of Italian salad leaves with a sliced chunk of dolce latte blue cheese and a dressing made with splashes of balsamic and white wine vinegar and olive oil. Tasted good - it's worth mixing the dressing properly!

Plus a mandarin and a mug of peppermint tea for dessert, alongside one or two bits of apple/pear/toffee-like remnants snatched while stewing additional fruit for breakfast for the next few days.

I'll be interested to see what the scales say on Monday - I doubt there'll be much change (I don't think they'll have gone up, though), since I know from long experience diet is not enough to shift my last five kilos.

One week today...

Weight today: 60.9. It was about half a kilo less on Sunday, but I had a big dinner last night. However, one should be accurate.

Anyway, yesterday's meals:

Breakfast - 3/4 bowl of fruit muesli with yoghurt, one banana, one mug of tea.

Lunch - 1 wholemeal roll with cheese and lots of spinach, one pear.

Dinner - 3/4 of a poppadam and some dip, lamb sag with rice and yoghurt sauce, small piece homemade chocolate cake, cup of milky chai with sugar.

Not going too badly, except for the EXERCISE!

Monday's food (healthy, but too many carbs. Grrr)

Breakfast - 1/2 bowl of fruit muesli with low-fat yoghurt, 1 banana.

Lunch - sun-dried tomato roll with smoked salmon, cream cheese, lettuce and cucumber. One 180ml innocent kids smoothie. 1 apple

AT - 1 cup herbal tea. Two shortbread biscuits (50 cal each)

Dinner - bowl of pasta with a tomato, tuna and spinach sauce, and a small bit of grated cheese. Plus the remainder of this morning's yoghurt tub, and a mug of black decaf tea with honey.

Much organising accomplished today, which is good. Still lots to go, though. Am moving into a new office, and thus have a year's worth of PhD clutter to get rid of!

And the clocks wind down...

Which means, in a less melodramatic form, that the holidays are almost over. Grr.

Anyway, many errands today, which left me tired, which meant I ate badly. Not disastrously, but not too well either.

Brunch: panini with cheese and beetroot, apple and blackcurrant juice, an apple.

AT: 1/2 35g bag of popcorn (from Pret a Manger)

Dinner: 1 mushroom pastry roll, a rasberry yoghurt, a banana, a mince pie

Later: 1 low-cal hot chocolate with milk, other half of popcorn, wholemeal roll, half with cheese, half with vegemite.

Needs improvement. At least I walked quite a lot in town, and mostly in the rain, to boot. Roll on spring!

Snow falling on cities

Well, yesterday was heavy snow and today was freezing cold, so exercise is on the back burner, especially given certain other health issues ;)

However, the food is going fairly well. Except for, er, getting up in time for breakfast! However, this can't last, as I've got to go back to work on Monday. Grrr.

Anyway,

Thursday:

Breakfast - was again lunch, although this time I stuck to actual lunch foods. 1 large bowl wild mushroom soup, 2 pieces bread with butter. Large glass of water.

AT - one pot rasberry low fat yoghurt

Dinner - pasta salad from Tesco, doctored - cold meat (mainly chicken), pasta, bits of red capsicum, lots of spinach (added extra), bits of cheddar and half a carrot. Some caesar dressing (less than half provided amount - who could have that much?) Followed by four pieces of pineapple. 1 white chocolate button

Later - one mug decaf tea and a piece of fruit cake

Friday:

Breakfast - at lunchtime. Bowl of apple and blueberry porridge with frozen rasberries and 7 white chocolate buttons and a squeeze of honey. One small carton fruit smoothie.

AT - one kellogs muesli bar, one apple

Dinner - salad with 1/2 tail piece hot smoked salmon, spinach, half a carrot, cheddar and leftover caesar dressing (still not finished, but rest was thrown away). Plus chunk bauernbrot with margarine. Dessert - pot strawberry low fat yoghurt, 1 banana. 1 mug low-cal hot chocolate

Later - 1 mug decaf tea, 1 piece fruit cake. (pieces are getting smaller. This is good.)

I think I feel better, actually, except for the hormones. Hopefully I can keep things up.

Day Two

Not a great day, by any means. Still grey (although it seems to be drier), but really, really cold. And I've got a nagging headache/feeling of lethargy. Argh!

Anyway, breakfast was lunch:

Chunk of bauernbrot with margarine and apricot jam, organic strawberry yoghurt, glass of fresh orange juice and a banana. Plus a cup of tea.

Dinner will be leftover pakoras and rice, perhaps with broccoli as well. (We must eat more vegetables...) Will be followed by an apple (eaten with cheddar), and tea and a piece of fruit cake either then or later.

Many of today's plans have been foiled by the fact that it's still a public holiday in Scotland. I'll still try to get organised. I just wish I had more energy. The fact that radio 3 is playing Wagner is not helping either...I'm not sure I want to start the year with twilight of the g-ds!

New Year, New Start

Well, it seems I let this lapse in Oz, and never brought it back to life. Let's make a second attempt.

I won't say the last six months have been completely disastrous for my eating, but particularly in the last month, I have not been doing too well. Part of it was my gran dying unexpectedly, which threw me completely off track. Plus there's the usual Christmas season issues - even though I don't celebrate it, I was in Germany on research and then in Prague, and two cuisines which are based on bread, cheese, booze and sweet things are not good for the waistline.

Actually, the damage isn't that bad, based on the scales, but I feel rather icky. So here's to a new year, and a new resolution.

Weight: 70.9 kg. Will be checked once a week, on Monday morning. If I can get to and stay at 65kg, I'd be extremely happy. So there's not much to lose, but given my medical condition, it's not going to be as easy as all that. Plus there's the dreaded exercise issue. I'm not a fan. And the weather up in Scotland at the moment makes outdoor activities seem like a fate worse than death. (I had planned a walk today. But it's freezing, and very wet. I'll wait till the gym opens again tomorrow.)

Jan 1st

Breakfast - 1 bowl porridge with semi-skimmed milk, frozen rasberries, two spoons single cream and 7 white chocolate dots. This may seem an odd way to start a 'diet', but I didn't want a miserable beginning to the new year. The additions added less than 100 calories, and a lot of flavour. Not to become a habit, but definitely worth it for me. (And it's definitely healthier than the porridge van's version of same!) Plus 2/3 glass fresh orange juice. Eaten to the accompaniment of the Vienna Phil's New Year's Day concert. Most enjoyable.

Lunch - somewhat late, after a nap. I haven't really felt properly awake all day. Anyway, I had a plan involving salmon and salad, but Tesco had sold out of spinach yesterday, so I had to improvise. 1/2 a tail piece of hot smoked salmon, mixed with a teaspoon light mayonaise and a small piece of cheddar. Served with a chunk of bauernbrot (I think this is my new favourite) and some broccoli I rescued from the freezer. Plus a banana and a large mug of water.

Oh, and two teaspoons chocolate mousse while I was making it for dinner. My neighbour is cooking, and I wanted to contribute something.

Dinner - vegetable pakoras, freshly made (small, had about six?) plus basmati rice with chickpeas. Dessert - four tablespoons pakistani rice pudding, 2 tablespoons mousse (which turned out very well, although I only used single cream). Plus a mug of berry tea.

And all tablets present and accounted for.

Tomorrow will involve many errands, doing the washing, and the like. Fun for all. But I must fit in some exercise.

I also need to buy quite a few groceries to make some bigger dishes to have ready. A sort of non-commercial ready meal I can yank from the freezer. Plans include some homemade pizzas (I've got a good base recipe), some vegetable pies, and a pot of sausage stews.

We'll see how all this pans out.
